Here is my monthly update while the project is running:
- April 2021
- I have decided that I want to do a project connecting my public health minor, neuroscience major, and lab experience together. Currently, I am thinking of a series of educational tik-tok style videos that link together to make longer, denser videos.
- May 2021
- I have assembled my advisory team – yay! I have 3 amazing advisors who are going to be so helpful going forward. I have also applied for SURIP funding for the first planning and development stages of my project. I am thinking that I will do an animated video series.
- June 2021
- I received SURIP funding! I am funded for summer research! This month has been busy with reading existing literature about video-based research and understanding what is currently used to communicate information about mosquitoes.
- July 2021
- My project outline has changed slightly… I am thinking that I will make one video and evaluate it’s effectiveness on communicating information. I am beginning to collect questions for my survey and plan my video.
- August 2021
- I just presented in virtual EUReKA here at UT, even with laryngitis due to allergies. It was so exciting to share what I have been working on this summer with other people.
- September 2021
- I am working more on survey development this month. I will be creating a pre-and-post test survey for this video. The mosquito disease that I will focus on in this project will be La Crosse Encephalitis.
- October 2021
- I am still hammering out my survey, hopefully it will be done by the end of the month! I am also on my second round of edits for my video!
- November 2021
- IRB application time! My video and survey are complete – yay! And I am working on submitting my project for IRB approval.
- December 2021
- IRB edits have come back and are being made! I am planning on being able to start collecting data in February 2022. I am uploading my survey into Qualtrics this holiday season.
- January 2022
- IRB approval is continuing, and I am beginning to write my methods section.
- February 2022
- After a few edits to the survey, I have re-submitted for IRB approval.
- March 2022
- Finally, Backyard Buzz has received IRB approval! I am posting the survey to my social media and hoping (ambitiously) for 100 responses in 1 month.
- April 2022
- The survey is now closed – we received around 97 responses, but not all of these are complete responses. So, now I am going through and cleaning up the data for analysis. Additionally, I am conducting my analysis and writing the paper portion of my thesis project. April marks not only the close of my time to complete this project but also the start of Presentation Season! I am participating in EUReCA this year at UT as well as the Spring MEGA:BITESS meeting and cannot wait to share the information I have learned with others in the community.
- May 2022
- TBD!
