Year One Coursework

Fall 2017

  • Chem 120: General Chemistry I
    • I loved learning more about how chemicals interact and the properties associated with them. From this class, I began to wonder how the human body was able to manage and manipulate internal chemicals to achieve homeostasis.
  • Math 141: Calculus I
    • Math has always been one of my favorite classes. I love the logical approach to solving problems and working from what you know to what you don’t know.
  • Econ 207: Honors Introductory Economics
    • Economics has been an interest of mine since I took AP Macroeconomics in high school. It interests me how all aspects of our lives are impacted by economics. From the food we eat, to the choices we make, money and prices play a major role in all of it! This class make me think about why I thought and bought the way I did and allowed me to explore the economic systems in the United States and abroad.
  • English 198: Chancellors Honors English
    • Through our exploration of Temple Grandin’s book, Thinking in Pictures, this class encouraged me to look at the differences in people as advantages and to find people’s strengths, not their weaknesses. Additionally, this class centered on looking at stereotypes, minorities, and discrimination. This lead to our final project for that year which looked at both disabilities and mental illness and the stereotypes and discrimination associated with them. I have attached the paper I wrote about anxiety below.
  • FYS 129: Jazzin’ it up around the World
    • One of my favorite aspects of this course was being exposed to a totally new genre of music and learning the roots of jazz and how it developed into what we all love today.

Spring 2018

  • Chem 130: General Chemistry II
    • This course focused more on the properties of acids and bases along with organic compounds. From this course, my interest in internal chemicals continued to grow.
  • Math 142: Calculus II
    • The work with derivatives and integrals in Calculus 2 was interesting and engaging. I enjoyed learning more about the complexities of calculus and how formulas are interconnected.
  • UNHO 277: Honors Plants, Parks, People. From the Smokies to San Jose
    • This class was one of my favorites this year! We explored ecotourism and the ways that the US and Costa Rica approach national parks and land preservation. As part of this course I also had an independent study project looking at the use of alternative medicine in both Appalachia and Costa Rica.
  • English 298: Chancellors Honors English
    • English 298 focused on research, specifically gathering and analyzing data. For this course I researched alternative medicine use in the Knoxville area and physicians opinions on the treatments and overall increase nationwide in acceptability and interest in alternative medicine. Also, I researched the use of photo editing applications and social media platforms and how they contribute to young adult self-esteem.
  • Bio 105: Parasites, Pathogens, and Pandemics
    • I have thoroughly loved my time in this class. I think it is fascinating to learn about how diseases are spread and how they impact the body. I also found the development and increase in awareness about public health to be fascinating.
  • FYS 129: Meditation For Academic Success
    • This class was very interesting for me. It made me begin to think about and approach my emotions differently than I had before. In this course, we talked about the “why” of how we think and beginning to try and see the people behind the emotion. This course challenged my view of myself and made me think about my goals differently, as well as teaching me the value of mental rest.
